    Is the Jury Still Out? Legal AI Outperforms Lawyers and ChatGPT in Vals AI Study on Legal Research

    Vals AI’s October 2025 VLAIR legal research benchmark compared Legal AI, ChatGPT, and human lawyers on 200 U.S. law questions—with human evaluators. Legal AI scored highest on accuracy (77% vs. 74% and 69%), led on authoritativeness through better citations, while lawyers still excelled on nuanced, multi-jurisdiction tasks. This piece walks through those results, the study’s strengths and blind spots, and why similar benchmarks matter beyond the U.S., including for African jurisdictions and tools like Eskwai.
