Kwame AI is excited to announce the launch of Eskwai Pro Bono, a new initiative to improve access to justice in Africa and beyond. We are proud to announce that the Legal Aid Commission, Ghana, is the first beneficiary. Through this program, they will have free access to Eskwai, our trustworthy legal AI, to assist their lawyers and staff in providing legal services to people who cannot afford them.

Legal aid is crucial for ensuring that vulnerable and indigent populations have access to justice. The Legal Aid Commission, Ghana, is a statutory body established to provide legal aid services to poor and vulnerable people through legal education, advice, assistance, mediation, and representation. It, however, faces significant challenges due to limited resources—only about 45 full-time lawyers serve a population of over 30 million. This shortage makes it difficult to provide timely and effective legal assistance. The urgent need to bridge the justice gap created by limited human and financial resources is clear.

Eskwai Pro Bono aims to help address this issue by enabling the Legal Aid Commission’s 190 staff, consisting of lawyers, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) officers, and administrative staff, to have access to Eskwai to research efficiently, draft documents faster, and review thoroughly using our comprehensive database of cases and legislation or their documents. Furthermore, we will provide training on how to use Eskwai effectively and technical support as they use the tool.

Here is a quote from Mr. Edmund Foley, Executive Director of Legal Aid Commission, Ghana, about the partnership:

The relationship, which we have birthed with Kwame AI, enabling us to use the Eskwai platform, is truly a trendsetting one. Through the use of this AI tool, we see great opportunities to strengthen our mandate to provide free legal assistance and bring justice to the doorstep of those who are most in need. It also offers our staff a unique pathway to enhance their skills in research, analysis and professional service delivery. Together with Kwame AI, we would work hard to make Eskwai Pro Bono, a household name across Ghana, Africa and the world at large.”

Eskwai Pro Bono is set to enhance the efficiency of legal aid lawyers, allowing them to process cases more quickly and accurately, reducing the time spent on legal research and document preparation. This increased efficiency means that more individuals in need can be reached, helping to bridge the gap in access to justice for indigent and vulnerable populations.

By equipping legal aid professionals with advanced AI tools, Kwame AI aims to help bridge this gap, making legal services more efficient and accessible. This initiative is in line with Kwame AI’s broader vision to leverage AI to make legal services across Africa more accessible, efficient, and affordable, contributing to a more equitable and just legal system where every person has the opportunity to seek and obtain justice regardless of their means.

We invite legal aid organizations worldwide to connect with us and discover how Eskwai Pro Bono can help them enhance their impact.
